Doxycycline is used to treat bacterial infections. Doxycycline treats urinary tract infections, intestinal infections, respiratory infections, eye infections, sexually transmitted infections (like gonorrhoea and syphilis), gum infections, diseases (like periodontitis), and others. Besides this, Doxycycline also treats acne-like lesions caused by rosacea. However, it does not treat facial redness caused by rosacea.
Doxycycline being an antibiotic prevents the growth of bacterial cells (the bad ones!) by preventing the formation of the outer protein layer of bacteria (cell wall) responsible for bacteria's growth and multiplication. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, i.e. it acts against various bacteria. It is a bacteriostatic antibiotic, i.e. it stops bacteria growth but does not kill them.
Doxycycline should only be taken if advised by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food but should be consumed at a fixed time for the best results. You should complete the course of Doxycycline as your doctor prescribes for better results. Some common side effects of Doxycycline are nausea (feeling or being sick), vomiting, diarrhoea, etc. Please consult your doctor if these side effects become troublesome.
Doxycycline is pregnancy category D (high risk) medicines, so its use in pregnant and nursing mothers is not recommended. Use of Doxycycline during tooth development (last half of pregnancy, infancy, and childhood up to the age of 8 years) may cause teeth staining (yellow-grey-brown). Do not consume alcohol as it may cause excessive drowsiness when taken along with Doxycycline. Before using Doxycycline, tell your doctor if you ever had an allergy to Doxycycline, have kidney problems, liver problems, swollen food pipe (esophagitis) or muscle disease (myasthenia gravis). Please do not drink alcohol with Doxycycline as it may increase the unpleasant side effects like drowsiness and dizziness.
You should consume plenty of water while taking Doxycycline as it can increase your risk of getting drowsiness and memory loss.Forum Topic: Doxycycline for Animal Health
User123:Hey everyone,
I've been on Doxycycline for my pet since last year, but I'm noticing some side effects. The first one I noticed was nausea. It was pretty weird, but after reading other posts here and here, I decided to get it under control.
Doc:I've heard that if you get a tetracycline antibiotic, doxycycline can also treat a skin infection (calledtinea versicolor) as well. That's what I used to buy from my local pet supply store for a few months, and now that I'm starting my own business, I'm considering it more of a "cure" option.
Asking for a vet is the way to go!Doxycycline is a great antibiotic, and it's a great option for animal health if your pet has one. I've heard it's a good option for human health, but I can't quite put my finger on exactly how effective it is.
Thanks for the quick response. I'll definitely talk to my vet about this. I've been on Doxycycline for a while now, but it's definitely not effective. The side effects are similar to what I experienced. The tetracycline was good, but the side effects were less severe. I also have some GI side effects, like nausea and headaches. My vet prescribed me doxycycline for two reasons: 1. For a tinea infection, it's a long-term maintenance treatment. If it doesn't work for you, she might give me a prescription.
